Brass cleaning pads can be used in addition to, or in place of, a damp sponge to remove oxidation and contamination from soldering tips.
The brass pad will expose the tip to less thermal shock and have a lower risk of becoming contaminated when compared to a damp sponge.
Brass pad is softer than the iron plating on solder tips, but harder than the oxidation, resulting in a safe method to remove oxidation from tips without damaging the iron plating.
